My Archives: December 2001

Teddy Casiņo, in his column Fast Forward in one of the local newspapers, Business World, writes about "A Bleak Merry Christmas" today.

I guess a lot of people share his views. The year 2001 was not an easy one, locally, nor internationally so it may be difficult to find the positive side to anything. He talks about trying to get into the Christmas spirit - by doing all the things that come with the season, particularly for us Filipinos: shopping, gift-giving, attending Midnight mass, having noche buena. He laments the fact though that he feels that Edsa II is in need of a sequel (which I disagree with)and talks about going to the movies when "all hope is gone." [more]

"Can we buy Jesus a cake for His birthday?" my thoughtful, loving son asked me a few days before Christmas. I was happy, of course, that he remembered what Christmas was all about and that he even wanted to give something which he thought was a staple for anyone celebrating a birthday. [more]

Just went to the 6th day of the simbang gabi (dawn masses here in the Philippines during the Christmas season from December 16-24) this morning. Must really be getting older. It's not that difficult anymore to wake up early (about 4:30am) and I don't get too sleepy during the mass proper. [more]

"Why are you so fat?" My 5-year old niece asked me directly and bluntly last Sunday. My son quickly came to my rescue by saying: "My mommy's pregnant." [more]

Militant groups here in the Philippines, frustrated probably with how things have been going (as we all most likely are), have tried to be witty by coining the phrase: "Paskong walang glorya" (translation: joyless Christmas or Christmas with no glory). The phrase obviously is a pun, making use of President Gloria Arroyo's name. [more]

We are now well into Advent and everywhere you look, there are physical signs that Christmas is near. One time, we were driving through the Ortigas area, and my son pointed out the snowmen decorations. [more]

It has almost been a week since we've had Lobsie, my son's pet fortune lobster. Last night, I chanced upon my husband and my son feeding Lobsie his daily dose of pellets. [more]

We finally got to catch the movie Harry Potter last weekend. I enjoyed it a lot and it has succeeded in making me want to read the books. I have not read a single Harry Potter book yet (yes, such creatures do exist)but I guess before the next movie comes out, I would have been able to finish a book or two. [more]
