My Archives: November 2003

A few weeks ago, the mere thought of Da King and/or Ping assuming the presidency, was enough to annoy and scare me. For a moment there, I almost joined several people I know who entertained thoughts of migrating should any of the two win. [more]

I got quizzical or smiling looks from hotel personnel and taxi drivers as I inquired whether they knew where I can get hold of my dad's request: "jamon de punda." That's raw leg of ham, wrapped in cloth. As I stayed in Bukidnon from Wednesday to Friday, not a day passed by (I think) that I did not ask someone about Jamon de Punda. [more]

As we went around Cagayan de Oro on our way to the airport, we passed by an area where we saw several barber shops. The names were quite distinct, showing the Pinoy's sense of humor. [more]

I now have a favorite tree - the jemelina tree. We saw lots of them in Bukidnon. They're tall and thin and they usually come in several rows. I look at them and end up relaxed. [more]

There's mass here at 6:20am daily - which is more manageable than the much earlier mass at the Monastery of the Transfiguration. Plus the Carmelites sing so simply but well - I can still hear their "Do not be afraid I am with you... I love you, you are mine." [more]

"Peace to all who enter." This sign greets you at the entrance to the monastery run by Benedictine monks. After following a relatively narrow and winding road, you come upon a place that appears to calm you just by being. [more]

We stayed at Pine Hills Hotel while in Bukidnon. It's a hotel with about 28 rooms. My boss asked our taxi driver if the hotel was a nice one on our way there and our driver said: "Maganda naman. E yun lang naman ang hotel doon." (It's a nice hotel. It's the only one there anyway.) [more]

We temporarily interrupt the Bukidnon series to write about a topic you'd never expect from me - boxing! I'm no fan of the sport but yesterday (credit it to good promotion, marketing and media exposure), I found myself actually watching the fight between Manny Pacquiao (to us Filipinos) and Pa-kee-yao to foreigners and Barrera. A certain Mario was supposed to pick us up at the Cagayan de Oro airport. He was supposed to be holding a sign with our names. Well, he didn't show up. Even after we contacted the person who arranged for Mario's services. [more]

Up until this year, I didn't have the slightest idea where Malaybalay was. I learned it was in Bukidnon and about a week ago, I found myself in that area.

"Hindi ba delikado dun?" my mom asked when she learned I would be travelling to Mindanao. I guess the situation is similar to foreigners who have never been to the Philippines and have nothing to base their impression on but what they see on CNN. I wasn't too worried though. Anything can happen anywhere if it is meant. Some people sleep and a plane falls on their house. That sort of stuff. [more]

We just came back from a 4-day break in Maribago Bluewater Resort, Cebu. Every year, our family takes a vacation and every year, I realize (as I forget during the year) how good it is to take a break. Now, I'm looking forward to planning our 2004 outing - just like some people look forward to merienda, right after finishing their lunch. [more]
