Happy VD!

That time of year has come again. The time most lovers eagerly await, the time loveless beings reasonably and naturally dread. What time of year am I talking about? I'm talking about that two-faced day in mid-February when flower shops, card shops, and chocolate-makers rake in all the money. Two-faced? Well, two-faced since how you look at Valentine's Day depends on which side of the heart's fence you're on. In love? Then Valentine's Day might as well be the best day of the year. There'll be roses, candle-lit dinners, and all that saccharinely sweet stuff. The day would simply reek of romance and surprises. Even if your boyfriend turns out to be a cheapskate, at least you have someone to share the day with. Just delude yourself by saying: 'At least he's responsible when it comes to money matters. No foolish spending.'

Out of love or wanting to be in love but aren't? Then Valentine's Day might as well be declared as the most festive, most exciting, most awaited, most cheerful, grandest day of the year and you simply wouldn't notice. While others are thinking of ways and means of stretching that irritatingly short 24-hour day, you would be wondering how you could bring this agonizing day to a swift end. There would be no roses nor gumamelas, no cute cards nor mushy letters, no Kisses nor Chocnut for you. You wonder why they had to set aside one day of the year to rub in the fact that you have no special someone. At the same time, various reactions run through your head. Your thoughts on the day are varied and numerous: quizzical (Valentine's Day, ano yon?), indifferent and cynical (Happy Bale Walang Time), enraged (Happy Violentine).

Well, back to a question raised. Why did they have to set aside one day every year for lovers? Can't they love and surprise each other every day of the year? Oops!

Reflecting on that question, I guess Valentine's Day isn't so bad after all. It was probably an act of great kindness, compassion, and charity on the part of those in love. Imagine if they acted like it was Valentine's Day every single day of every single week of every single month of every single year? Loveless beings would simply go nuts. Those in love have thus decided: 'Let's just have a Valentine's Day. Don't you think one day is punishment enough?'
