Disappearing Flickr Photos

Do you use the free online photo album service at Flickr? Sometimes your photos might disappear.

My friend Lorna uploads photos to her Flickr album online, and then writes blog entries that reference those photos. This means that her actual web site does not contain the photos because those photos are stored in the servers at Flickr.

(If you're running out of disk space for your site, and if your photos occupy huge amounts of space, Flickr can be quite convenient for you.)

In her own web site, she writes code that allows you to view the photos on the same page as her web page text, even if the photos and the text are stored in two different servers.

Yesterday, I got an sms text asking if her Flickr photos disappeared, because when she viewed her web site, she could see the text but could not see the photos. So what gives?

Well, I checked and saw both text and photos. This means that somehow, her internet connection had issues with respect to the Flickr server. The route between her internet service provider and Flickr may have had some lost connection issues, which explains why the photos did not appear.

Flickr is a great online photo album service. If you want to save yourself the anxiety of losing photos, you might consider storing them on the same server as your blog or web site. I use a combination of both, because there's an online community in Flickr that helps you meet more friends.
