Child Book Review 8: Mushroom in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg

WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The story is about the experience of several animals who are caught in heavy rain. They hide under a single mushroom and although each animal starts out feeling cramped, they eventually have enough room for all. Then the sun comes out and shines...

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT THIS BOOK? Our kids will learn about different animals. They will be exposed to different ways of describing things in heavy rain: there's wet, drenched, dripping. The ending teaches our kids too about the workings of nature.

WHAT DO OUR KIDS LEARN? Our kids learn that it is alright to ask for help or assistance. The story illustrates having a concern for others and being able to share even when you think you may not have enough for you. And when we give, even if we think we do not have enough, the universe will work to our favor -- and eventually, to our surprise, we will have enough.

Now, if the Philippines could only be like a mushroom in the rain...
