Jing Hidalgo's New Story CollectionThe University of the Philippines Press, as part of its UP Jubilee Student Edition 2005 series, releases "Sky Blue After The Rain: Selected Stories and Tales" by Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo. If you haven't read Jing Hidalgo's previous four short story collections and two novels, you'll find them in this new collection along with a new, previously unpublished story. Jing Hidalgo has won several awards for fiction and non-fiction. She was also a former head of the UP Creative Writing Program and the UP Creative Writing Center. Formerly a director of the UP Press, she is now UP Vice President for public affairs. I met her once and she struck me as a quiet, soft-spoken person. May this new story collection help make the best of Philippine literature in English and Filipino more accessible to students, teachers and the general public. (I wonder if they will ever release these stories in web, PDF, and audio formats. Wouldn't that help make this collection even more accessible?) The writers included in the Student Edition are National Artist Virgilio Almario, Jun Cruz Reyes, Jose Lacaba, Teo Antonio, Rebecca Añonuevo, Alfred Yuson, Jose Dalisay, Gémino H. Abad, Cirilo Bautista, J. Neil Garcia and Charlson Ong. Also included are young writers F. H. Batacan, Cris Martinez, Romulo Baquiran, Tara FT Sering and Alan Popa.
