Philippine Heroes

Lots of parents have been asking about national heroes of the Philippines because August is the "Buwan ng Wika" (National Language Month).

Yes, a lot of school children are focused on Tagalog, Filipino, and Filipiniana, so here's a quick list of various Philippine heroes:

Dr. Jose Rizal (National Hero of the Philippines)
Andres Bonifacio (Father of the Katipunan)
General Gregorio del Pilar (Battle of Tirad Pass)
General Emilio Aguinaldo
Apolinario Mabini - (Sublime Paralytic)
Padre Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora (GOMBURZA)
Emilio Jacinto (Brains of the Katipunan)
General Antonio Luna
Melchora Aquino (Tandang Sora / Mother of Balintawak)
Graciano Lopez-Jaena
Panday Pira
Mariano Ponce
Gregoria de Jesus
Juan Luna
Marcelo H. Del Pilar
Jose Palma (Lyricist of the Philippine national anthem, in Spanish)
Marcela Mariño Agoncillo (made the first Philippine flag)
Lapu-Lapu (first Philippine hero; last person seen by Magellan)
Francisco Dagohoy (Bohol revolt)
Julian Felipe (composed the Philippine national anthem)

This is but a sprinkling of the many luminaries that light the heavens of Philippine history. For more info about Philippine heroes, please see:

I'll be looking for a list of modern-day Filipino heroes. Stay tuned!
