SMART Mobile Email and Internet ServiceNTT DoComo and Smart Communications team up to offer Smart subscribers i-mode starting March 15. What is i-mode? It is a mobile email and internet service launched by NTT DoCoMo in early 1999 in Japan. And if you know how e-connected mobile phone users are in Japan, you might be excited to know that the same scenario will eventually unfold in the Philippines. Imagine that: 24 million internet users in the Philippines. I wonder if that figure includes mobile internet access subscribers. Given that a lot of Filipinos walk around with their cell phones, could an internet-anywhere crowd or barkada be far behind? Smart reports that it has more than 30 million subscribers in its GSM network. And if only 10% actually try the i-mode mobile email and Internet service, that's an additional 3 million internet users in the Philippines alone. Let's see how things go in the coming months...
