Mobile Internet Network Search

With Globe Visibility and a Huawei E220 USB modem, you can do a manual network search with the mobile connect program.

For example, if you stand at the Ortigas and EDSA intersection and perform a manual network search, you'll find the following (tested on Nov 10, 2006):

Globe GPRS
Smart 3G
Smart GPRS
Digitel GPRS
Globe 3G (detected on Nov 11, 2006)

(Download speed of 100 - 170kbps, upload speed of 60 - 90kbps. EDGE GPRS?)

Globe Visibility in Other Places
1. BodyPlace, Robinsons Galleria - 43kbps dl, 18kbps ul (feels like dial-up) (GPRS shows 5/5 bar)

2. Max's Restaurant, 4F, Robinsons Galleria - UMTS network detected, 780 kbps dl, 386 kbps ul

3. Ortigas Avenue, in front of Robinsons Galleria - frequently shifts between UMTS (blue light) and HSDPA (aqua light); unable to connect to online speed tests (UMTS shows only 1/5 bar) unless you change your network connection to "GPRS only."

4. Pasig, C5 - UMTS/HSDPA, but 1/5 bar only; unable to surf. GPRS 5/5 bar, 48kbps dl.

5. Cainta - same experience as Pasig (#4).

What about you? What have you found in your part of the mobile internet world? Please let me know. Thanks!

(NOTE: There's been a change in the Globe Visibility agreement. You can now use your SIM card even for voice and sms text messages. Of course, you'll be billed accordingly. Anyway, if ever you feel like sending sms text via your computer's keyboard, you can now do it with Globe Visibility and your Huawei E220.)
