Nick Joaquin Dies

Philippine National Artist Nick Joaquin passed away this morning in his home in San Juan. He suffered a heart attack.

I met Nick Joaquin during the intermission of the musical Larawan (based on Nick Joaquin's Portrait of the Filipino Artist).

I just walked up to this frowning man, and handed him a copy of the programme. I tried to smile while asking for his autograph. He stared at me. I dunno... He looked peeved. But then he signed the programme and smiled briefly.

Inquirer article -- National Artist Nick Joaquin Dies

Long-time companion Jojo Sumarago said in a statement to INQ7.net that he noticed Joaquin's "malaise" this week. On Monday, he said the writer "was a bit quiet and wanted only fruits and buko juice."
