Spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy

Spyware refers to programs that record your online behavior (i.e., what sites you surf to), and then transmit the information to someone without your knowledge. Sometimes, there are also called adware -- programs that show you advertisements because you downloaded and installed another program for free.

Adware can be bothersome because they can hijack your browser's homepage. Even if you change your homepage settings, you'll find that the next time you run your browser, the homepage will revert to whatever web site the adware wants to promote.
